Liquor stores will laugh in the Face.com at your fake ID

Image
Okay, it's only 3 months till your glorious 21st birthday, so near, yet technology has to come along and rain on your parade. You might think you look legal, but if claims by engineers at Face.com are to be believed, they're not having it. Using the firm's face recognition technology and a new API, they believe it can determine age based on a photo. The technology is open to all developers who might want to add age restriction into their apps, although it's unlikely that you would want to rely on this as your sole method of verification. The algorithm takes a number of factors into account, such as face shape, and skin smoothness, so at the very least you'll be able to find out if your t-zone routine is working. Hit up the more coverage, where there's a free iOS app to learn the harsh reality.

Blind man 'drives' Google's autonomous car

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

Google's self-driving cars this week passed a new milestone after the web giant asked a blind man to take the wheel. The above video, posted yesterday on Google+, shows Steve Mahan take a trip to a Taco Bell restaurant before returning home - but Mahan is 95 per cent blind, far beyond the legal driving limit.

Mahan, who is head of the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center in California, made the journey without having to touch the wheel or pedals thanks to Google's driverless car technology, which uses an array of video, radar and laser sensors to constantly scan the road. The car in this video followed a pre-programmed route, successfully navigating junctions and corners without incident, but Google's autonomous driving fleet has racked up more than 200,000 miles of driving, including unplanned journeys on public roads.

Self-driving cars could make a huge difference to the lives of visually-impaired people, says Mahan."There are some places you cannot go, some things that you really cannot do," he says. "Where this would change my life is to give me the independence and the flexibility to go to the places I both want to go and need to go when I need to do those things."

Google's video concludes by labelling Mahan "Self-Driving Car User #0000000001", but the company has previously cautioned it will be many years before such vehicles are available to the public. Want one sooner? Read more in our in-depth look into the current state of driverless cars.

Cruising around town in a gas-saving Chevrolet Sonic? Or perhaps you've got your name written all over the 2013 Spark's waiting list? Well, GM has some good news to share. Starting in the fall, those of you with a MyLink system on either of these rides will be able to add GogoLink navigation for around $50. The service's features include live traffic, emergency info, 3D maps, Google local search and native maps storage on smartphones to use for turn-by-turn directions when you can't get a signal. GM's saying that since GogoLink won't be out until the Spark's electrifying release, you'll have to make a quick pit stop by the dealer to get the app installed on your 7-inch infotainment slab. What's a few extra bucks to save you from getting lost, right?

(AP) ? All the upstarts are headed home. It comes down to North Carolina and Kansas, the bluest of the bluebloods, for a spot in the Final Four.

Thomas Robinson had 18 points and 15 rebounds, Jeff Withey blocked 10 shots to finish one shy of the NCAA tournament record, and the second-seeded Jayhawks held off No. 11 seed North Carolina State 60-57 in the Midwest Regional semifinals Friday night.

The top-seeded Tar Heels escaped with a 73-65 overtime win over No. 13 seed Ohio earlier in the night, setting up a Sunday showdown between the Jayhawks and North Carolina, led by former coach Roy Williams.

Kansas (30-6) squandered an eight-point lead in the final few minutes, and didn't wrap up the win until Richard Howell's off-balance heave at the buzzer came up well short.

The Jayhawks poured off the bench to celebrate, while coach Bill Self seemed to slump his shoulders in exhaustion. He then headed for the scorer's table to shake hands with N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried, who needed only one season to turn around the Wolfpack.

C.J. Leslie had 18 points to lead N.C. State (24-13), despite sitting much of the second half with four fouls. Scott Wood finished with 12 points on 2-for-10 shooting, though his biggest mistake wasn't a missed shot but the shot he never even got to attempt.

N.C. State had pulled within 58-57 on a transition layup by C.J. Williams with just over a minute remaining. The teams swapped possessions before Kansas managed to get a layup from Elijah Johnson off an inbound pass from Tyshawn Taylor with 13.5 seconds remaining.

The Wolfpack crossed midcourt and called a timeout to set up a play, which was designed to get the ball to Wood off a skip pass in the corner. But the sharpshooter stepped out of bounds when he tried to pull in the high pass, giving the ball back to Kansas with 5 seconds remaining.

Robinson was fouled and missed the free throw at the other end, and after a heave three-quarters of the way down court, Howell's tightly guarded shot at the buzzer came up nowhere close.

Johnson finished with 11 points for the Jayhawks, who advanced despite a miserable performance by Taylor at the point. Their second-leading scorer was held to six points on 2-for-14 shooting, missing all six of his 3-point attempts.

Kansas was just 1 for 14 from beyond the arc as a team.

The Wolfpack took a page from Purdue's playbook over the first eight minutes, using constant double teams on Robinson inside and forcing Kansas to settle for jump shots.

It didn't happen, at least early on.

Just as they did against the Boilermakers last weekend, the Jayhawks appeared sloppy and disinterested. Leslie took advantage by scoring five of his 12 first-half points during an opening salvo, and C.J. Williams' 3-pointer gave the Wolfpack a 17-11 lead ? their biggest of the half.

Kansas eventually clawed back, relying on defense during a 12-0 run.

Withey provided most of it inside with seven blocks in the first half. A couple of them allowed the Jayhawks to get into transition, where they're at their best, and by the time Taylor scored with 7:10 left in the half, Kansas had pulled into a 23-17 lead.

Leslie provided an answer with back-to-back baskets for N.C. State, and his bucket on the heels of a 3-pointer by Scott Wood gave the Wolfpack a 33-32 lead at the break.

They wouldn't lead again.

Elijah Johnson, who provided the big shots that allowed Kansas to reach St. Louis, hit his first 3-pointer of the game out of halftime. It was the start of a 12-2 run during which Leslie was forced to the bench with four fouls and nearly 16 minutes still on the clock.

Kansas extended the lead to 50-40 when Taylor lobbed a pass to Withey for an alley-oop dunk, and a partisan crowd inside the Edward Jones Dome roared in approval.

Leslie finally checked back in with less than 7 minutes left, giving N.C. State a brief boost. But moments later he was back on the floor beside the bench as trainers worked on what appeared to be a cramp in his leg, and Kansas took advantage by pounding away inside.

The Jayhawks managed to coax the lead to 58-50 with just over 3 minutes remaining, and then held on during a furious stretch to finish the game, advancing to the regional finals for the fifth time in the past six years.

Tips For Local Business Marketing | gentask.com

Tips For Local Business Marketing

Article by Liz Jones

In any local business, marketing is a key component to success. After all, no one will buy a product or pay for a service if they do not know it exists. Therefore, companies employ various marketing strategies in order to introduce their innovations to the masses, including video promotions, fliers and newspaper advertisements. The bottom line for any type of business is increasing its sales and, subsequently, its profits.

The Internet?s Role in Local Marketing

The Internet has transformed the way the average business owner markets their products and services. Through local internet marketing, the time and expense of an advertising campaign is greatly reduced because the tools provided on the World Wide Web are among the most powerful and far reaching. Several successful methods to advertising online include on-page optimization, off-page optimization, pay-per-click and mass e-mailing.

On-Page Optimization

By utilizing one of many on-page optimization methods, a business owner will place a URL in a few keywords listed on their website page. In the event that a visitor clicks on a URL-embedded keyword, the link will take them to a different page on the site. Ii can also raise the number of keywords on the site to interest search engine spiders crawling sites, which raises the likelihood of people finding the website in a keyword search. Doing this gives the company another opportunity to turn a visitor into a paying customer.

Off-Page Optimization

Off-page optimization works slightly different from its on-page counterpart. With off-page optimization, a company will request that a different website than their own display their URL; this is also known as a web link. When someone clicks on the web link, they will be taken to the company?s website. This method of local internet marketing is ideal for business that are new to the industry and have larger, similar businesses they must compete against.

Pay-Per-Click

Pay-per-click, also called PPC, is a type of advertising campaign gaining a significant amount of popularity among its users. In order to use this method, the business owner must pay a search engine for the right to display the company?s online advertisements on related search results pages. Historically, pay-per-click provides quick, short-term web traffic for those using it. When the paid PPC campaign is complete, the ad stops running and no longer appears on the search engine results page.

Mass E-Mailing

Mass e-mailing, or bulk e-mailing, is accomplished through the use of specific electronic mailing lists. For companies that find it difficult to attract new customers, mass e-mailing is an effective way to bring in potential customers. The widely-distributed e-mail must be tailored to the targeted customer?s budget and preferences. In addition, the ideal mass e-mail will include a thought-provoking title, interesting company introduction, flattering product information and eye-pleasing graphics.

(AP) ? Rush Limbaugh's opponents are starting a radio campaign against him Thursday, seizing upon the radio star's attack of a Georgetown law student as a "slut" to make a long-term effort aimed at weakening his business.

The liberal Media Matters for America is using a past campaign against Glenn Beck as a template. In Limbaugh, however, they're going after bigger game. He's already fighting back and the group's stance has provoked concerns that an effort to silence someone for objectionable talk is in itself objectionable.

Media Matters is spending at least $100,000 for two advertisements that will run in eight cities.

The ads use Limbaugh's own words about student Sandra Fluke, who told congressional Democrats that contraception should be paid for in health plans. Limbaugh, on his radio programs, suggested Fluke wanted to be paid to have sex, which made her a "slut" and a "prostitute." In return for the money, he said Fluke should post videos of herself having sex. Under sharp criticism, Limbaugh later apologized.

In one of the anti-Limbaugh ads, listeners are urged to call the local station that carries Limbaugh to say "we don't talk to women like that" in our city.

Ad time was purchased in Boston; Chicago; Detroit; Seattle; Milwaukee; St. Louis; Macon, Ga.; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The cities were selected to support active local campaigns against Limbaugh or because of perceptions Limbaugh may be vulnerable in that market, said Angelo Carusone of Media Matters.

"What we're really looking for is a way to demonstrate the persistence of the effort and the fact that it is on a wide scale," Carusone said.

A spokeswoman for Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates Limbaugh's show to nearly 600 radio stations nationally, said Media Matters has gone beyond criticism of Limbaugh's words to an attempt to silence him and intimidate advertisers.

"This is not about women," said Rachel Nelson, Premiere spokeswoman. "It's not about ethics and it's not about the nature of our public discourse. It's a direct attack on America's guaranteed First Amendment right to free speech. It's essentially a call for censorship masquerading as high-minded indignation."

Limbaugh, on his radio show Wednesday, said he's being targeted in an attack that was long-planned ? not mentioning it was his words that lit the fuse.

"They're not even really offended by what happened," he said. "This is just an opportunity to execute a plan they've had in their drawer since 2009."

Determining how much of a financial impact the Fluke comments have already had on Limbaugh is murky business.

Radio stations in Hawaii and Massachusetts have dropped his show. Media Matters claims that 58 companies have specifically asked that their ads be excluded from Limbaugh's show. Radio-Info.com's TRI Newsletter said Premiere has circulated a list of 98 advertisers who want to avoid "environments likely to stir negative sentiments," essentially all politically pointed talk shows.

There's more. TRI also said a group with several stations that air Limbaugh sent out a list of 31 advertisers who don't want to be on Limbaugh's show.

Premiere notes that a list is sent out four times a year reminding stations of advertisers who don't want to be part of controversial programming, and suggests a reported exodus is exaggerated. The company offered no list of its own, or a comparison that could show advertisers resistant to Limbaugh or other controversial shows that predated the Fluke comments.

Some companies said not to want to advertise within Limbaugh's program ? JC Penney, NAPA Auto Parts, Chapstick, Gold Bond, Green Mountain Coffee ? did not respond to requests to clarify their policies. One company listed, NBC-TV, said the network was unaware of any policy or past efforts to advertise with Limbaugh.

Valerie Geller, a veteran radio consultant who worked at Limbaugh's WABC flagship in New York, said it appears that advertising money coming into Limbaugh's show is slowing down. "I think it's a very big wakeup call," she said.

Whether the advertisers return is another question. Limbaugh has a daily audience estimated at between 2 million and 3 million people, according to Talkers magazine.

"I suspect some people will permanently stay away," said Tom Taylor, executive editor at Radio-Info.com. "I suspect some people will drift back to Rush. What you won't see is a press release of someone saying, 'Hey, we're back with Rush!'"

While a law student, Carusone was active in a campaign to reach Beck's advertisers that began after the commentator said in July 2009 that President Barack Obama had "a deep-seated hatred for white people." Eventually, more than 400 advertisers said they didn't want to be part of Beck's show and, for Fox, the ad revenue was nowhere near what would be expected for a TV show as popular as Beck's. When Beck left Fox in June 2011 to take his show to the Web, the parting was mutual.

The idea with Limbaugh is similar: take advertisers away so rates go down, Carusone said. Couple that with the need to keep track of ever-changing lists of who will advertise with Limbaugh and who won't, and Media Matters hopes that station managers, market by market, may someday conclude that it's just not worth the trouble.

Conveniently, many stations will soon have a choice. Former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is launching his own syndicated radio show in April that will air at the same time as Limbaugh's, and Huckabee's backers are touting the show as a more civilized alternative.

Beyond the First Amendment concerns, industry experts like Talkers magazine publisher Michael Harrision are concerned that Media Matters' effort will simpy take some advertisers out of radio altogether when they have different options.

Carusone said Limbaugh has a chilling effect of his own. "There are plenty of people who self-censor out of fear that Mr. Limbaugh will smear them," he said.

The means of protest puts Media Matters and the conservative Media Research Center in the unlikely position of agreeing with each other. Brent Bozell, founder of the conservative media watchdog, said his group also informs advertisers of things it considers objectionable.

"We all have free speech," Bozell said.

That's where the agreement stops. Bozell this week called on MSNBC chief Phil Griffin to resign, citing objectionable things said in the past by Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton, both MSNBC show hosts. It's in part retaliation for attacks on Limbaugh, he said. The Fluke story was covered extensively by MSNBC.

"There's a great sense of selective outrage that is going on here," he said.

Drillers, activists not buying Obama's energy pitch

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

CUSHING, Okla. -- Touting an "all-of-the-above" energy policy, President Barack Obama traveled to this oil town on Thursday to show his support for the southern leg of the controversial Keystone oil pipeline proposed?from Canada?to refineries along the Gulf Coast.

"I am directing my administration to cut through red tape, break through bureaucratic hurdles, and make this project a priority," he said with?dozens of pipes stacked up behind him at a yard used by TransCanada, the company?proposing the?Keystone pipeline.

But neither the oil industry, which insists Obama could send stronger market signals to lower prices at the pump, nor environmentalists, who cite the climate impact of fossil fuels, were on board.

"A true all-of-the-above energy strategy would include greater access to areas that are currently off limits, a regulatory and permitting process that supported reasonable timelines for development, and immediate approval of the Keystone XL pipeline to bring more Canadian oil to U.S. refineries," Jack Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute, said in a statement. "This would send a positive signal to the market and could help put downward pressure on prices."

Obama in his speech noted that domestic production has risen during his term. "America is producing more oil today than at any time in the last eight years," he said. "Over the last three years, I've directed my administration to open up millions of acres for oil and gas exploration across 23 different states. We're opening up more than 75 percent of our potential oil resources offshore. We've quadrupled the number of operating oil rigs to a record high."

The southern leg would help drain a glut of crude in Cushing, the storage hub for U.S. crude oil traded on the futures market, easing deliveries to refineries along the Gulf Coast.

As for the overall Keystone project, Obama said the delay in the northern?leg came about because Nebraska lawmakers?-- both Republicans and Democrats --?raised concerns about the potential impact on the state's water supply if a spill happened. "So to be extra careful that the construction of the pipeline in an area like that wouldn't put the health and safety of the American people at risk, our experts said that we needed a certain amount of time to review the project," he said Thursday.

FirstRead on Obama's support for Keystone's southern leg
Data show increasing US oil supply won't lower prices
Keystone pipeline could raise oil prices for some

Environmentalists, for their part, oppose the pipeline because it promotes the expanded use of fossil fuels, which emit greenhouse gases tied to global warming.?The activist group 350.org?planned to make that?case by protesting Obama's visit to Ohio State University later Thursday.

David Greenberg, of Greenberg Capital, discusses oil's direction and President Obama's energy plan.

Some have even made the argument that Keystone's southern leg won't help domestic oil producers much since most of the oil will be coming from Canada.

It "simply is not designed to move significant volumes of domestic crude," Anthony Swift, an international law attorney for the Natural?Resources Defense Council, wrote in a blog post.?"The 900,000 barrel per day (bpd) pipeline only has two comparatively small on-ramps in the United States," he added, citing company documents filed with the U.S. "The first, in Montana, includes an on-ramp for a maximum of 100,000 bpd of crude. The second in Cushing, Oklahoma, allows a maximum of 150,000 bpd ... That means that at most, little more than a quarter of the oil on Keystone XL would be from domestic producers."

Republicans dismissed Obama's move as a publicity stunt that made little difference to the timeline of the southern project or the problem of U.S. energy security. "He's taking credit for going forward on the only portion of the pipeline that he doesn't need to approve," said Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., at a press conference. "This is literally straddling both sides of the issue." Hoeven has led the charge in the Senate to pass legislation that would bypass the administration and approve the full pipeline.

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., wants the oil coming from Canada to stay in the United States and not be exported.

Construction of?Keystone's 485-mile southern leg is expected to start in a few months, once TransCanada?gets a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers.

"We have been working with them for weeks and we hope to have the permit in place to allow us to begin construction mid-year," a TransCanada spokesman Terry Cunha?told NBC News. "As the president highlighted, they are supportive of the project as it helps move domestic oil to the refineries."

The Army Corps of Engineers said Wednesday it could not estimate how long approval would take since it had not yet seen an application from the company.

TransCanada plans to submit a new proposal for the?1,200-mile northern leg, after which federal agencies will weigh in.

US companies lose as sanctions strangle Iran

Like everyone, Iranians need diapers. Fred Harrington has built a business by selling Iran the raw materials to make them.

The Redmond, Washington, businessman, who exports to Iran under a humanitarian license from the U.S. Treasury Department, says he is owed close to $3.8 million by Iranian companies who cannot pay him because of the latest U.S. and European Union sanctions.

He is not alone.

U.S. firms from major drug makers like Merck & Co. to mom-and-pop outfits like Harrington's American Pulp & Paper Corp. are finding it hard to get paid even for medicines and other humanitarian exports explicitly allowed by the U.S. Treasury, according to officials, sanctions lawyers and the companies.

US: No Iran oil sanctions for Japan, EU nations

"Everything from aspirin to multivitamins - you name it - it's all jammed up,'' said Cari Stinebower, an international trade lawyer with Crowell & Moring, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm, and a former counsel for the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

The payments gridlock is a testament to the effectiveness of the latest round of financial sanctions, which aim to force Iran to curb its nuclear program and which have made the Iranian banking sector even more radioactive for major global banks.

But they also undercut the long-standing U.S. argument that its sanctions are not meant to squeeze the Iranian people but rather the Islamic republic's leaders and their suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons.

"I am not against punishing Iran for being a rogue country but the United States, or the Europeans, when they start imposing sanctions, then they must consider, also their own companies,'' Harrington said.

Harrington, an Iranian American who changed his name from Farhad Fouroohi, had to lay off three people in February because of the payments delays, cutting his staff from seven to four.

Lawyers decry outsize impact
While a new U.S. law targeting financial institutions that deal with the central bank of Iran has garnered much attention, sanctions lawyers said the Jan. 23 blacklisting of one Iranian bank had a more immediate, sharp effect on humanitarian trade.

Bank Tejarat, Iran's third-largest bank, was "designated'' ? or blacklisted ? under a U.S. executive order targeting people and companies that promote the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as well as their support networks.

The action has the effect of cutting them off from the U.S. financial system, along with any bank who deals with them ? a risk that many banks find impossible to take.

Over the last five years, the Treasury has blacklisted 23 such Iranian-linked entities, gradually squeezing Iran's ability to do business with the world.

Tejarat's blacklisting has had an outsize impact, sanctions lawyers said, because it had been the last major Iranian bank available for legal trade with Iran. With it now off limits, companies are having to sift through smaller banks to find some that can carry out the transactions ? which is no mean feat.

"That has had a huge ripple effect,'' said Douglas Jacobson, a Washington attorney who focuses on sanctions work.

"On the one hand, you can get a license. The government is saying, 'OK you can sell.' But the practical reality is that you can't get paid,'' he added.

The lawyer said one of his clients is out several hundred thousand dollars because of the Tejarat blacklisting and that he knows of several medical companies that have stopped exporting to Iran because of the payment problems.

"Where you had a small window of opportunity previously, that window is now almost completely closed,'' said Erich Ferrari, another lawyer who specializes in trade sanctions.

The decision on Thursday by Belgium-based SWIFT, the world's biggest electronic payment system, to expel all Iranian banks blacklisted by the European Union, may make it even harder to conduct transactions, sanctions lawyers said.

The United States has gradually tightened sanctions because of Iran's failure to answer questions about its nuclear program, which Washington and its allies suspect is a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says it is solely to generate power.

The sanctions became much tougher when President Barack Obama on Dec. 31 signed a law designed to choke off Iran's oil sales by threatening to cut off foreign banks from the U.S. financial system if they dealt with Iran's central bank.

Merck & Co., the world's third-largest pharmaceuticals company, said it has licenses to sell Iran products to treat diabetes, cancer, respiratory illnesses and infections.

"(Merck) has experienced a challenging situation in 2012 in terms of securing payments for goods shipped,'' said Merck spokeswoman Kelley Dougherty, adding the company was open to ideas to "facilitate exports of humanitarian goods, including medicines,'' in accordance with U.S. law and regulations.

Pfizer Inc, the world's largest pharmaceuticals maker whose flagship products include the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, acknowledged challenges in getting paid for Iranian sales, saying it would work through them. Both Merck and Pfizer declined to provide details.

"There is some turbulence right now,'' said Pfizer spokesman Peter O'Toole, saying the company wished to ensure that Iranian patients have access to needed medications. "If we have to work through a little turbulence, that's what we'll do.''

A Treasury Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity said its approach on humanitarian exports to Iran had not changed, though he did not directly address questions about the difficulty that U.S. companies were having getting paid.

"There's been no decrease in applications to OFAC to export humanitarian items to Iran,'' the spokesman added. "The recent sanctions imposed on Iran have not changed our approach to the export of food, medicine and medical devices to Iran.''

For companies such as Pfizer or Merck, exports to Iran are a tiny fraction of their worldwide business.

If ordinary Iranians ultimately suffer shortages of drugs and medical devices, the Iranian government may use it to score public relations points with their own people against the West, much as former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did in Iraq.

"They need to defend their position to their own population. They need to continue to create this image of an international community that is implacably aligned against the interests of a defenseless Iran,'' said Suzanne Maloney, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy.

"This kind of imagery would play into that and it'll have a certain resonance among Iranians who have a long experience with sanctions, resent the impact of sanctions on ordinary citizens and believe ... the government is well able to insulate itself.''

'Washington's ears clogged'
The United States bars virtually all trade with Iran. It cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 1980 after Iranian students seized its embassy in Tehran and ultimately held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

Last year, the United States exported only $229.5 million worth of goods to Iran.

"Woodpulp and pulpwood,'' which includes the raw material for diapers, accounted for $57.9 million, followed by $50.1 million for pharmaceuticals, $29.5 million for plastics, $23.4 million for unmanufactured farm products and $22 million for medical devices, according to U.S. Commerce Department data.

Under U.S. law, the export of diapers to Iran is not allowed but the export of fluff pulp, their key component, is, creating an opportunity for Harrington to sell it to Iran.

Of the $26.6 million in sales his company had last year, Iran accounted for roughly 70 percent.

The impact has been so big that Harrington wrote Obama a plaintive letter on Feb. 9, saying the latest U.S. sanctions "have virtually stopped our business overnight.''

"We would appreciate your comments and any suggestions as to what we could possibly do at this point,'' Harrington wrote.

"From our perspective, it would seem that there is nothing left to be done except to close our doors.''

Harrington, who argues there should have been a "wind-down'' period to clear existing payments, has received no reply.

"We have not received any reaction and I don't expect to,'' he said. "Washington's ears are clogged. They don't hear it at all.''

Ventre: History is against Manning succeeding

Image: Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning holds his jersey in EnglewoodReuters

If anybody can beat the trend of failed team switches among star QBs, it is Peyton Manning.

OPINION

updated 1:09 p.m. ET March 21, 2012

Michael Ventre

Call it Second Team Syndrome. It afflicts millions of Americans every year. OK, maybe just two or three a decade. But there?s no known cure. Now Peyton Manning has a case of it.

Won?t you help?

I am speaking, of course, about that rare condition that involves star quarterbacks who spend most of their careers with one team, then change uniforms in their golden years. Alas, the survival rate is alarmingly low.

Manning probably has a better chance than most of beating it. He turns 36 on Saturday, he?s smart, he?s in relatively good health ? except for the possible after-effects of major neck surgeries, that is ? and he had the good sense to sign on with the Denver Broncos, a team formidable enough to both protect him and provide him with the talent to succeed.

Yet, he?s a quarterback and he?s attempting to recapture the glory of his youthful years spent with his first franchise. Those criteria alone suggest he is predisposed to stumble.

Just consider his ancestors.

Among the most famous in this dubious category is Johnny Unitas. Although he had a brief stint as a Pittsburgh Steeler, he made his reputation through many marvelous years as a Baltimore Colt. His teams won NFL championships in 1958 and 1959, and he was a member of the squad that won Super Bowl V. Unitas was one of the greatest players who ever donned a uniform ? but you wouldn?t have known it by seeing him struggle in San Diego Chargers? togs during the 1973 season. Bad idea.

There must be something about the sun and beaches of California that lure aging signal-callers with their alleged recuperative powers, because Joe Namath joined the Los Angeles Rams for the 1977 campaign, which turned out to be his last. His knees were already wobbly, but he played for the Rams as if someone had stolen them altogether.

Joe Montana, who led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl titles, was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 1993 and led them to their first AFC Championship Game. But obviously he couldn?t work the same magic he produced in the Bay Area, and he only lasted in K.C. for two seasons.

And the most recent example is Brett Favre. He was a legend as a Green Bay Packer. Technically he started out as an Atlanta Falcon, but didn?t make a mark in his very short time there. Traded to Green Bay, he became a star, taking the Pack to two Super Bowls and winning one.

But he spent one strange and confusing year in 2008 as a New York Jet, and two more controversy-plagued seasons with in Minnesota. In his first year with the Vikings, he led the team to the NFC Championship Game. Bravo. But the second was just a study in elder abuse, as Favre suffered a shoulder injury and a concussion, and his dignity was carried off on a gurney. He also butted noggins with coach Brad Childress in a rather public spat.

There have been other such quarterbacks of lesser note, of course. It?s a hazard of the trade. Quitting ordinarily isn?t associated with honor, except when it applies to star quarterbacks who don?t know when to jog off the gridiron for the last time. In such cases, it?s a capital idea.

That isn?t to say Manning will necessarily flop. On the contrary, he might be the one candidate who defies the second-team destiny laid out for him. Still, there?s that neck.

If he were completely in the pink, there probably would be little doubt as to his prospects for leading the Broncos to a successful season and postseason, maybe even a Super Bowl. But of course, if he didn?t have multiple neck surgeries, he wouldn?t have missed last season, the Colts wouldn?t have the top pick in the draft, and Manning would still be with his original team. His neck is the monkey wrench in this scenario.

The reason QBs with their second teams tend to disappoint is primarily because of age and infirmity, combined with absurd expectations. When Namath went to the Rams, he brought his name, the same one that guaranteed ? and then won ? Super Bowl III. But that?s all he brought. How exactly was Montana ever supposed to leave an imprint in Kansas City that was big enough to equal four Super Bowl victories?

Manning has a capable team around him, and it figures to be even more impressive when a few key free agents sign on. He?s playing in the AFC West, which is there for the taking.

Yet there is also the issue of comfort. In Indianapolis, he was in a system he knew better than those who devised it. He played inside a dome, on artificial turf. He had grown into incumbency and was all powerful.

In Denver, as much as coach John Fox tries to tailor his offense to Manning, it will take some adjustment. Psychologically, Manning should make the leap and play with the same level of confidence in Denver that he established in Indy. But there is no guarantee of that, being human and all.

Different linemen, different receivers, different backs, different coaches. The possibility exists all that might yield different results than Manning is used to.

If anyone can rise above Second Team Syndrome and go on to lead a full and productive football life, it?s Peyton Manning. It?s just important that he and those around him have a frank discussion about what lies ahead.

A positive attitude is always key. If Peyton watches clips of Namath in a Rams uniform, sitting dejectedly on the pine, and declares to himself, ?That won?t be me,? then that?s half the battle right there.

Shot Chicago police officer in critical condition

A Chicago police officer who was shot in the chest while pursuing a curfew violator on the city's South Side is in critical condition after surgery, but his prognosis is good, a police spokeswoman said.

The 47-year-old officer and others had approached four curfew violators late Monday night to conduct a field interview, said officer Laura Kubiak.

"One of the subjects fled the scene into an alley," she told msnbc.com, reading from a police statement. "An officer pursued the offender into a front yard where the offender fired shots striking the officer in the upper body. The offender fled the scene."

The eight-year veteran of the force is being treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center, where doctors were able to stem the bleeding, Kubiak said.

The officer, who had been wearing a bullet-proof vest, lost two-thirds of the blood in his body. Surgeons did not remove the bullet,
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden told NBCChicago.com.

The bullet is lodged next to the officer's spine, Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters: "It's not bad news, but it's not the type of news we want to hear."

A person of interest --? 20 years old, believed to have gang ties -- was being questioned, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The officer's wife, two children, mother and pastor were at the hospital, McCarthy said.

"This guy's a great cop," he said. "There's a very somber mood. Everyone's very serious and focused on praying for his recovery right now."
