Any mention of torture is classified, military judge rules

In a significant victory for government prosecutors, the military judge presiding over the trial of accused 911 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has granted a government request to treat as classified any testimony or discussion about the alleged torture of Mr. Mohammed and others during CIA interrogations.

The judge, US Army Col. James Pohl, issued a broad protective order barring the disclosure of any information deemed by the government to be classified. The ruling was handed down Dec. 6 and was made public on the court?s website on Wednesday.

Off limits at the military commission trial at the US Naval Base at Guant?namo Bay are any details surrounding the defendants? capture, detention, and alleged torture by the CIA. It includes ?the enhanced interrogation techniques that were applied to an accused ? including descriptions of the techniques as applied, the duration, frequency, sequencing, and limitations of those techniques.?

The 9/11 trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed: A quiz

The judge added that ?without limitation, observations and experiences of an accused? would also be treated as classified information as they emerge from a defendant?s mouth.

Defense lawyers had challenged the government?s expansive assertion of authority to designate certain subjects as protected secrets in the case, saying it was improper for prosecutors to attempt to censor Mohammed and his four co-defendants from discussing their own personal observations of things they involuntarily endured during years of CIA detention and interrogations.

Defense lawyers and lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union argued that the government was exceeding its authority by declaring that anything Mohammed or his co-defendants might say would involve the disclosure of sensitive CIA sources and methods.

?We are profoundly disappointed by the military judge?s decision, which doesn?t even address the serious First Amendment issues at stake here,? said Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU?s national security project.

?The government wanted to ensure that the American public would never hear the defendants? accounts of illegal CIA torture, rendition, and detention,? she said in a statement. ?The military judge has gone along with that shameful plan.?

Ms. Shamsi said the ACLU would attempt to appeal the ruling.

?For now, the most important terrorism trial of our time will be organized around judicially approved censorship of the defendants? own thoughts, experiences, and memories of CIA torture,? she said. ?The decision undermines the government?s claim that the military commission system is transparent.?

Although some details of their treatment have been made public, there has never been a full public accounting of what was done to certain terror suspects, including Mohammed, in the name of protecting US national security.

Officials have acknowledged that Mohammed was subjected to a particularly brutal interrogation technique known as waterboarding. Reports are that he was subjected to the technique 183 times.

Human rights advocates say waterboarding is torture. The US government says it did not and does not engage in torture.

The issue is important in Mohammed?s military commission trial because the jury that decides the case must be able to assess the credibility and veracity of the government?s evidence.

Some of the evidence may have been obtained during coercive interrogations. But if any mention of interrogations is barred, jurors may not be in a position to make a full assessment of certain pieces of evidence.

Judge Pohl defended his protective order, saying his ruling did not decide pending issues of relevance, materiality, or admissibility.

?The ? protective order neither expands the traditional rules of discovery nor addresses what use, if any, can be made of the disclosed information during the course of a trial,? he wrote.

?Rather, it provides the framework for defense counsel to obtain and assess classified information while at the same instance permitting the government to preserve information relevant to our national security.?

The judge also approved the continued use of a 40-second delay to the courtroom audio made available to members of the media and others viewing the trial behind thick, soundproof glass.

The 40-second delay gives government censors time to cut off any audio broadcast of the trial in the event that classified information is uttered or otherwise revealed in open court.

The order also gives censors the authority to cut off the audio when they suspect classified information is about to be revealed.

The protective order says in part: ?The broadcast may be suspended whenever it is reasonably believed that any person in the courtroom has made or is about to make a statement or offer testimony disclosing classified information.?

Judge Pohl acknowledged that members of the media and the ACLU object to the delayed audio as an unwarranted closing of the court.

He said he was ?acutely aware of [his] twin responsibilities of insuring the transparency of the proceeding while at the same instance preserving the interests of national security.?

Pohl said the ?brief delay is the least intrusive and least disruptive method of meeting both responsibilities.?

Shamsi disagrees.

?The problem is not so much the audio delay, but the basis for it,? she said. ?The delay is the tool through which the government unconstitutionally prevents the public from hearing testimony about torture.?

Pope Tweets: 'Dear Friends... '

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The pope has tweeted.

In perhaps the most drawn out Twitter launch ever, Pope Benedict XVI pushed the button on a tablet brought to him at the end of his general audience Wednesday. It read: "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."

Later in the day he was to respond to a few messages sent to him from around the world.

As the countdown to his first tweet from his Twitter handle (at)Pontifex neared, the pope had garnered nearly 1 million followers in the eight languages of his account.

Why latest failure of global warming talks may be a success

The weak outcome of the climate change talks in Doha only add to the momentum toward solutions at the local level, where values on the common good are more easily shared.

Another worldwide conference on climate change ? the 18th one since 1992 ? ended last Saturday with little to show for it. The minimal result ? an extension of the largely ineffectual Kyoto Protocol ? has added to growing pessimism over the ability of nations to agree on a new treaty to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Yet this gloom has an upside. It is reinforcing attention on the ways that individuals are banding together to combat global warming. In fact, many activists now argue that local efforts ? in which people with similar values toward managing Earth?s resources join in collective action ? may be a strong viable solution.

?We desperately need to combine action by regions, municipalities, citizens with this global approach. That is becoming more and more evident,? said Denmark?s Energy Minister Martin Lidegaard after the meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Take, for example, the fact that the United States has no explicit mandate on individuals to reduce carbon emissions. Yet more than 1,000 mayors and 30 states have climate action plans. And tens of thousands of groups have sprung up to promote changes in behavior, from buying local food to using solar panels to biking to work.

The secret? The smaller the community, the more people are knitted socially to pool their moral inclinations toward ending human-caused warming. Or, to turn around a famous quote by Aristotle about human selfishness in taking from a common good: The most care will be bestowed on our common environment if the maximum care is bestowed on each person?s role in it.

To climate scientists, this grass-roots version of social engineering on energy use may not arrive fast enough. Global emissions of carbon dioxide hit a record high in 2011.

Yet no one really knows if enough local actions might create a strong feedback loop and soon tip a massive change in behavior, similar to the decline of littering in the 1960s or smoking in public in the 1990s. The 2011 Arab Spring also reinforced the notion that good ideas can quickly cascade into reality when enough individuals adopt them.

This bottom-up approach could help overcome many political divisions, such as the current one in climate-change negotiations that pits poor and rich nations against each other. In many poor countries, for example, private investments in solar and wind power make more sense than those in fossil fuels. In fact, investment in renewable energy worldwide has exceeded that in coal, gas, and oil over the past three years.

Individual, voluntary decisions in energy use can make a cumulative difference on climate change far greater than government mandates. They rely on people making moral choices, ones that see a greater good in not emitting gases that can harm others. Any rules about energy use need to be built on shared values embedded in a community.

The more that the United Nations-led climate talks fail, the more the need for this local action becomes evident.

Sprint reportedly wooing Dish with spectrum sharing and MVNO possibilities

Sprint reportedly wooing dish with an MVNO and spectrum sharing arrangement

Spectrum is a valuable and finite resource, but it seems that Sprint has an overabundance of the stuff. In addition to the capacity needed for its namesake operation, along with its Boost and Virgin Mobile properties, the Now Network is currently leasing its capacity to Ting, FreedomPop, Republic Wireless, Voyager Mobile, Elevate and pretty much any other company that's willing to ink a contract. Now, Bloomberg reports that Sprint's looking to bring a biggie on board. According to the outlet's anonymous sources, Sprint has approached Dish Network with an offer that would allow the satellite company to establish itself as a wireless provider by using the Now Network's airwaves. Curiously, a fee-based arrangement isn't the only topic of discussion, as it's also said that Sprint is exploring a spectrum sharing arrangement with Dish that would put the satellite company's unused spectrum licenses to use.

For all the potential that such an agreement could provide, talks between the companies are currently said to be in a holding pattern while the FCC completes its review of Dish's spectrum holdings. As proof that duo aren't completely cozy, Sprint is currently lobbying the regulatory agency to impose rules that Dish insists would reduce the viability of its spectrum. Oh, the irony.

Prosecutor: Stephen Baldwin Failed to File Income Tax | FOX8.com ...

Prosecutor: Actor Stephen Baldwin charged with failing to file NY income tax

NEW YORK (CNN) ? Actor Stephen Baldwin was arrested Thursday on a charge of failing to file New York state personal income tax returns for three years, according to a statement released by the Rockland County district attorney?s office.

According to the statement, Baldwin?s alleged tax liability for failure to file in 2008, 2009 and 2010 is more than $350,000, including penalties and interest. The arrest was a result of an investigation conducted by the Rockland County Special Investigations Unit and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, the statement said.

Baldwin pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Thursday in Nyack, New York, and was released on his own recognizance.

?Mr. Baldwin did not commit any crimes,? his lawyer, Russel M. Yankwitt. said. ?He is working diligently with the district attorney?s office and the New York state commissioner of taxation and finance to resolve any remaining disputes,? Yankwitt said.

Baldwin?s lawyer said his client had cooperated in the year-long investigation that led to the charge and arrest. He said Baldwin did owe money to the government, but that no crime had been committed, as Baldwin did not have the intent to deceive.

Baldwin had trusted paid professionals to handle his affairs, especially during the time he was on an island shooting the reality TV show ?Survivor,? Yankwitt said.

Baldwin produced a check for $100,000 Thursday as a ?good faith? down payment on the money he owed, Yankwitt said.

Baldwin rode in his lawyer?s car to the police station and was not handcuffed. The government agreed on a date convenient for both Baldwin and his attorney for the arraignment about a month ago, Yankwitt said.

Baldwin is due back in court on February 5, but hopes his continued work with the state will lead to an agreement on an amount owed, Yankwitt said. They hope to settle somewhere between $100,000 Baldwin paid Thursday and the $350,000 the state is claiming, Yankwitt said.

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe said Baldwin?s failure to file returns and pay taxes had contributed to sweeping cutbacks and closures in local government agencies and schools.

?At a time when Rockland County and New York State face severe fiscal shortfalls, we cannot afford to allow wealthy residents to break the law by cheating on their taxes,? Zugibe said. Baldwin faces up to four years in state prison if convicted on the state felony charge.

And New York State Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Thomas H. Mattox said, ?It is rare and unfortunate for a personal income tax case to require such strong enforcement measures in order to ensure compliance with our tax laws ? particularly in light of the fact that the vast majority of New Yorkers fulfill their filing requirements voluntarily.?

The youngest of the four show-business Baldwin brothers, Stephen Baldwin is known for his 1994 role in the film ?The Usual Suspects? and a 1989 appearance in the TV series ?The Young Riders.? He also has become a conservative political activist, launching a conservative talk radio show in 2008, and speaking at political events around the country.

Inside California Olive Ranch during Harvest : Bay Area Bites

California Olive Ranch
Inside the Olive Orchards

Extra virgin olive oil. There is nothing quite like it. It has been called liquid gold, or green gold, a title that is well deserved. Historically, it has been used for everything from lighting lamps to moisturizing skin, but the best use of all in my opinion, is in the kitchen! It can transform the simplest of ingredients into something sublime. The taste of EVOO can range from fruity and grassy, to straight up peppery, and a myriad of nuanced flavor profiles in between.

As I?ve learned though, not all olive oil is made equal. In fact, not all olive oil is even real olive oil sometimes, thanks to some shady business dealings and misleading consumer marketing.

About 60 miles north of Sacramento though, in the small towns of Oroville, Artois, and Corning, you?ll find some good people making the real McCoy. California Olive Ranch produces 60% of the olive oil that is grown in California, and not only are they producing the genuine (delicious) article, they are doing it with integrity and efficiency.

Harvest time at California Olive Ranch
Harvest time at California Olive Ranch

When I was asked by the ranch if I?d be interested in visiting their 6,000 acres of beautiful olive orchards during the most exciting time of year?harvest time!?first, I checked to see if they were on Tom?s list (phew, yes, of course they were), and then I clapped my hands and jumped up and down.

Arbosana EVOO
Arbosana EVOO

The trip started with a special dinner at Ella, featuring a menu centered around EVOO, naturally. It was really interesting to see how different varietals were used in all the dishes, ranging from salmon poached in a mellow, floral EVOO, to chocolate cake made with a fruitier EVOO.

The next morning, we headed to the ranch to begin our education, blessed with an unbelievably gorgeous, sunny day, with picture-perfect clouds that just wouldn?t quit.

California Olive Ranch
Blue Skies and Emerald Orchards

We met Adam Englehardt, VP of Orchard Operations at California Olive Ranch. Adam is a fifth generation farmer. His family actually has a small olive ranch of their own in the Livermore Valley. His favorite oil is the Arbequina, and he has spearheaded the ranch?s winning strategy of combining old techniques with new technologies.

Adam Englehardt
Adam Englehardt, VP of Orchard Operations at California Olive Ranch

Northern California is located at 39?N latitude, which is the same as that of northern Spain and northern Tuscany, so it shares many of the same harvesting conditions. But, unlike traditional growers, California ranchers have tweaked their methodology to grow a tree that would allow them to harvest it more efficiently, thereby producing a higher quality oil.

?Like almonds, pistachios, and grapes?we have a history of taking a Mediterranean product and applying some Yankee ingenuity.?
? Adam Englehardt, VP of Orchard Operations at California Olive Ranch

This is coming from a guy who gets constant reports on nutrient and water levels from solar-powered irrigation probes, and can irrigate on demand via iPhone.

The mechanical harvester
The mechanical harvester

Let?s start from the beginning though. Way before iPhone farm management, back in 1996, a mechanical harvester was developed, allowing farmers to harvest their olive trees quickly. The harvester is much like the one used for wine grapes. The machine straddles the row of trees and as it moves down the line, it brushes off all the olives and captures it into a holding bin. The catch is, the trees have to be kept small enough so that the machine can sit above them. In order to make use of this new machine, farmers matched the tree to the technology and started to grow them in hedgerows (like wine grapes).

Adam Englehardt and Patricia Unterman tasting olives
Adam Englehardt and Patricia Unterman tasting olives

The 3 varieties of olives grown by California Olive Ranch are:

  1. Koroneiki (spicy)
  2. Arbequina (fruity)
  3. Arbosana (nutty)

All of the varietals were adapted to make the tree?s growth naturally more compact. They were planted closer and were given little to no water or fertilizer. Apparently olive trees do well under stress. They?ve been evolved to operate under harsh conditions in the desert, being eaten by goats, burned by day and frosted by night.

It may have taken a few years to figure out, but from the looks of it, the ranch has their system nailed down now. Growing the trees in hedgerows using a system of ?super high-density planting? allows for mechanical harvesting, which allows for the olives to be picked at perfection, quickly and efficiently, within the tight time frame of harvest.

Oh yes, did I mention the timing? Every year, the ranchers have only a 45-day window to harvest all of their fruit for the year. They need to beat the frost, pick early, pick quickly, and then press as soon as possible because once the olive is picked it starts to oxidize. Talk about stress.

California Olive Ranch
California Olive Ranch

From harvester, to the holding gondola, into the mill, the olives never touch the ground so bruising and oxidation is kept to a minimum. And, because the olives only travel about 35 minutes to the mill, they are pressed into fresh extra virgin olive oil within a couple of hours of being plucked from the tree.

The grand sum of all these moving parts? Seriously tasty extra virgin olive oil. Liquid gold.

Ding Hero to show rivals the way home in Coral Essex Vase - Heat 6 at Romford

Wins are not coming to Ding Hero?s way frequently, but he will be very tough to pass if leading by third bend in fifth heat of the Coral Essex Vase, being hosted by Romford on Friday night.

The white and black dog recently showed a couple of fascinating acts at Wimbledon. On November 3rd, he was quite impressive. In a 687 metres contest, the dashing hound led very soon after the start.

Railing in an excellent fashion, the son of Crash stayed ahead right through the contest. With the help of an outstanding effort, K. Hutton?s charge seized the first place comfortably by one and a half lengths.

The 3-year-old continued his fine work, and demonstrated a superb show on November 10th. Luck was not on his side though, as he missed the top place only by a neck?s distance. The latest ride was an unlucky one. Although he railed well, getting bumped hurt his cause badly. As a result, he ended up fourth on the chart.

One should not judge him on the latest loss. It was just an unlucky defeat, and the maverick hound is likely to show significant improvement today. Among his opponents are: Romeo Patriot, Bubbly Ebony, Adageo Brae, Carden Twilight and Bonamassa Buddy.

The 575 metres affair is going to get started at 21:25 GMT. The ultimate champion will get not only a place in the next round, but also a handsome prize of 175 pounds.

Carden Twilight cannot afford to give these opponents too much rope. Despite having the draw in favour, the black dog has no room for error. Adageo Brae?s poor wins-to-runs ratio hardly sets the pulse racing.

Home soil has not proved a happy hunting ground for Bubbly Ebony. The black dog was awful here last time. He got bumped twice, and could only finish fourth on the chart.

Bonamassa Buddy will have to step up on his recent efforts. Romeo Patriot, the Produce Stakes finalist, has some stamina issues. Even an inside crowding will not help him. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

Professional Development Plan: Improvement Plan | Chris Batu ...

Improvement Plan

So today I went on a journey that was sparked by one of my coaches. ?She?s been really successful with connecting with people, being a great coach, and growing her business. ?So, I took a page from her book and went about learning some of the tricks of her trade to see what might apply to my personal journey and goals. ?I?ve been a coach for several years but I know that there are still tons of things that I need to learn and I am eager to learn new things and see what I can apply for myself.

Process Improvement

This morning I tuned in to a webinar that I signed up for to get some information on how to improve some of my marketing approaches so that I?m not spending a lot of energy on things that aren?t really productive. ?It was a really great lesson and I was able to apply some of the information right away. ?Now, I have a better idea of how I should be working on my business development and I?m excited to see how things move forward from here. ?One thing I do know is that my process has improved tremendously from just this one lesson so I?m looking forward to finding more resources to improve my approach.

Self Improvement

The moral of the story is that there is always room for improvement no matter what the circumstances. ?John Maxwell says that if you?re at the top of your class or your social circle, then you?re in the wrong social circle because that means that your growth is limited. ?Thankfully, I?ve got some great people around me to help me continue to grow and learn new things and that makes me very aware of the fact that I need to continue to be able to do that for the people around me as well. ?About a year and a half ago, I had reached a certain level of success and became content to just enjoy that success and stopped growing. ?It put a huge stop on the growth of my financial success, so that was a hard lesson learned for me. ?I must keep working but not just working, I must keep growing. ?It?s not enough to just work on being great at one particular thing, I need to continue to expand my awareness and open up the doors around me so that I am aware of the options that will move me forward.

Fighting cancer with mustaches in ?Movember? | FOX6Now.com - WITI

a_4x-horizontal

(CNN) ? Seeing more mustaches this month? Many of them may be fighting cancer.

On November 1, global health charity Movember kicked off its signature event, a monthlong campaign encouraging participants to grow mustaches (or ?mo?s) to raise cancer-fighting awareness and funds.

According to Adam Garone, Movember?s CEO and co-founder, there are already more than 700,000 registered participants this year, and he expects to break 1 million ? a record for the organization.

That?s quite the growth for a project that started with 30 guys in Australia in 2003.

It was a social experiment back then, Garone said, with a simple goal: ?It was really just for fun. We wanted to bring back the mustache.?

But people quickly caught on, and it began generating a ?surprising amount? of conversation, Garone said.

The following year, four of the original 30 got together and decided to do it all over again ? for a cause.

With a little research, they discovered that prostate cancer was a major health concern for men and decided it could benefit from an open, ongoing conversation.

Unlike breast cancer, which has been supported by major educational and fund-raising campaigns for years, prostate cancer hadn?t been spotlighted in a substantial way.

?Growing a mustache is a very manly pursuit,? Garone said, so the group chose prostate cancer as its primary cause, with men using their mustaches, and faces, as billboards.

That year, 450 guys participated, raising $43,000.

Last year, 855,203 people participated around the world, raising $126.3 million.

The funds go directly to Movember and its partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Livestrong Foundation.

The organization?s strategy is simple: Keep people talking ? about mustaches, and the larger issue of men?s health.

Research last year showed that participants have, on average, 2,400 Movember-related conversations a month, Garone said. About 30 are face to face.

Social media causes that message to amplify, he said. Users have taken to Facebook pages and Twitter accounts to document their individual, ongoing facial hair activism.

It isn?t just one person asking another, ?Why the mustache?? The answer spreads to 100 ? or 1,000.

?The conversations do lead to a greater understanding,? Garone said.

Movember encourages both men and women (nicknamed ?Mo Sistas?) to participate throughout the month by registering through Movember.com.

The website has evolved an elaborate internal slang, including terms such as ?Mo Mentor? and ?Gala Part?,? which is what participants call their end-of-the-month celebrations, and it has information on everything from grooming tips to health risks.

The rules are simple: Don?t start with any facial hair and end with a lot.

Garone?s been asked before: Why a mustache, not a goatee or beard?

?It is a mustache,?? he said. ?And it?s a mustache for a reason.?

Thai police fire tear gas in clash with hundreds of protesters

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police fired tear gas in clashes with hundreds of protesters in Bangkok on Saturday ahead of a rally seeking to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in the largest demonstration yet against her administration.

The protest highlights tensions that have been simmering since Yingluck's Puea Thai party swept to victory in July 2011 and could herald another period of unrest in Thailand.

Anti-riot police wielding plastic shields fired gas canisters at protesters who tried to climb over cement and barbed wire barriers blocking entry to the rally site. Police said "between 300 and 400 protesters" clashed with police.

At least seven police were wounded and up to 132 protesters arrested in the clash near the United Nations headquarters in Bangkok, a stone's throw away from the main rally site.

Pitak Siam, a new anti-government group, has attracted the support of various royalist groups including "yellow shirt" members of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) who helped destabilize governments either led or backed by former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck's brother, in 2006 and 2008.

Authorities have deployed 17,000 police at the rally site and the government has invoked the Internal Security Act allowing police to detain protesters and carry out security checks and set up roadblocks.

Police say they have seized various weapons, including knives and bullets, as protesters arrived at the protest area.

"We used tear gas because protesters were blocking police and did not comply with the security measures we put in place," police spokesman Piya Uthaya told a local TV station.

Thailand has seen frequent bloody street protests in recent years including a rally that lasted more than two months by supporters of the present government in 2010.

Those protests sparked a military crackdown that left at least 91 people dead and more than 1,700 injured.

The royalist Pitak Siam group, led by retired military general Boonlert Kaewprasit, accused Yingluck's government of corruption and being a puppet of former premier Thaksin.

Thaksin remains a deeply divisive figure in Thailand. He was ousted in a 2006 military-backed coup and fled the country in 2008 shortly before being found guilty of abuse of power.

"I'm telling Thaksin that if he wants to return to Thailand he needs to bow before the king and serve his prison sentence," Boonlert told the thousands of protesters at the rally site.

Some held pictures of Thailand's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej as Boonlert shouted "Yingluck, get out!" to cheers of his supporters.

Thailand has seen a series of political protests since 2006 with pro-Thaksin and anti-Thaksin groups taking turns to challenge various administrations' right to rule.

Talking foster care and adoption with Iowa KidsNet: Randall, Steven ...

Happy Thanksgiving! For today's National Adoption Month series, we have powerful reminders from three children, all who were adopted by the same family, about what it means to be thankful for family.

My Family is the Best

My mom is the best cook.
My dad is the best Nerf gun shooter.
My brother Steven is the best bike rider.
My brother Daniel is the best swimmer.
and I am the best diver.

I love my mom,
my dad,
my brothers
and my cousins.
We are the Best Family

My life was not always the best.
I had to move around a lot.
My first family could not take good care of me.
I had to be in foster care.
I Hated That!

I miss my first family.
I miss my sister from foster care.

My forever family is so nice to me.
I love my forever family,
My mom,
My dad,
And my brothers.

We Are The Best Family!!!

- Written by Randall, at age 7

My Early Years

"My terrifying early years. I was born in the year 2000 (that was in the 20th century in case you didn't know) in Winchester, Virginia, at Winchester Region Hospital. I am not aware of what time I was born because I no longer living with my birth parents. When I was 20 months old, my older brother Randy and I were taken away because of neglect. I spent the next few years in foster care. I moved 10 times within 2 years. When I was 4, I was placed with my current family Joy and Brian Linn.

When we came to live with the Linns, they had a little toddler who was also from foster care. They also had a teenage girl who was also in foster care. I was very hard to adjust at first, because I was scared I would have to move again. But the Linns became my forever family. Today I really enjoy playing sports and spending time with my family."

- Written by Steven, age 12

Why I Want a Foster Sister

"Hello, my name is Daniel, and I am 10 years old. I like playing with Legos, playing on the computer and watching TV. My brothers like to play sports all the time. I sometimes get bored playing sports with them. They are more into sports than I am. I would really like to have a foster sister to play with. I think having a foster sister would be fun. I will play with her and I will tell her about the Bible. I would always be kind to her. I could push her stroller when we go on walks. I will help her buckle her seatbelt and I will hold her hand when we cross the street. I will comfort her if she was sad. I know what it is like to not be with my birth parents. I will try to help her feel better. I will struggle up with her and give her one of my stuffed animals. I will try to cheer her up by acting crazy and making her laugh. I think people should be foster parents because then your kids will have friends to play with. Foster children should have nice homes with good foster parents. It is hard being away from your birth parents but having good foster parents makes it easier."

Apple airs two new iPhone 5: Turkey and Orchestra

Apple has just released two new TV commercials for the iPhone 5 5 called Turkey and Orchestra. As you might imagine, Turkey focuses on the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, and starts off with... a turkey and all the fixings! Apple then shows the Photo app, and swiping between photos of a family in the midst of Thanksgiving celebrations.

Photo Stream is also highlighted, and the easy way it lets you share photos with specific family and friends, who can then enjoy and comment on them on their own iOS devices.

Oh, and there's pie.

"Mmm. Pie."

Orchestra shows off the noise-cancelling mic on the iPhone 5. According to Apple, even if a full symphony orchestra in a White Room right out of Angel is playing nearby, thanks to that mic you'll have a better than normal chance at still hearing your call, without having to ask the conductor to pipe it down.

These are both classic Apple iPhone commercials, showing off specific features and doing it in a slightly whimsical manner. Not disruptive by any means, but not as awkward as the genius commercials or as reality defying as the Siri commercials from earlier in the air.

What do you think of them?

Answer to Prayers: An Adoption Story - Parenting & Family

Let me tell ?you how to overwhelm an orphan child?

5 very white people smothering you with kisses. Taking way too many pictures. Muttering words over and over in a foreign language while 3 nuns tell you this is your mama and papa. And you don?t even know what a mama and papa are because you have lived in a Rwandan orphanage since you were born. And 3 new siblings trying to teach you to push your first toy (a little red fire engine) instead of throwing the little fire engine. For the first time in your life you are the center of everyone?s universe when prior you searched the room for any one to notice you. So day one was the most overwhelming day of Cooper?s life.

Then the next morning Zac, my husband, and I went quietly with no cameras or kids, just a sippy cup with orange juice. We watched as he hustled up the hill clutching the little fire engine- he must have fought off a lot of little boys to keep that toy over night.?

He remembered us. Mama and Papa. He relaxed into our arms and rolled with giggles as we tickled him. He pressed his nose against mine and whispered mama as he held my face in his little brown hands. He sang to me, I tried to sing along and he laughed. He told me all kinds of things, I?ve never longed to understand foreign words like I longed today. He played peek-a-boo with my sunglasses and learned the word cool as he strutted around the courtyard yelling his friends? names to show off his sunglasses.

We watched as an interpreter explained to him that we were his family and asked him if he would like to go home and live with us forever?. forever.

And he nodded yes with his whole body and smiled so big it hurt.?

That was over a year ago. And now Cooper just fits, like he was made for us. It has been the most costly pursuit of our lives- savings emptied and a 4 year old raised in an orphanage is empty in every way and requires more love than I often feel I have to give because before the beauty of adoption is the pain of abandonment. And the pain is complicated? I don?t know Cooper?s birth mother?s story. There are no records of living relatives or what happened five years ago outside of the doors of his Rwandan orphanage.

But I know adoption is born out of the most dire and broken moments? death and sickness and poverty and pain. To leave a child, your child, is the most costly of moments? moments I wish never existed for mothers, for children. But because this world is broken children fall asleep alone, completely vulnerable, completely unaware of love?. millions and millions of them.?

Recently Cooper and I were laying in his bed as I tucked him in, he still is afraid of the dark. I told him why I love the dark. I told him that in the dark you can talk to Jesus. I asked him if he ever talks to Jesus. He said with his English now very in tact,?

?In Africa I talked to Jesus a lot.?

I asked, ?What did you say??

?Jesus, please please bring me a family.?

We were God?s answer to his prayers? what a privilege to be a part of that.

Children are made for families- not orphanages. There was a time that I wondered if he would be sad to leave his friends and as a nearly 4 year old, the only home he has known. But He wants to pose for cameras and the whole room to stop because he walked into it. He wants our arms to relax in and a brother and sisters fighting for his attention rather than him fighting for anyone to notice him.

He longs to be overwhelmed by us. We are overwhelming him and he is completely overwhelming our hearts. We are taken.

War Vets Face Lethal Threat From Bed Bugs Says The Counter Media

Immunology Specialist And Attorneys Issue Warnings

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) November 12, 2012

Desert War veterans suffering from mystery illnesses loosely defined as "Gulf War Syndrome" have a new concern. Medical studies and researchers now show bed bugs represent a lethal threat to America's veterans due changes to their immune system while in service in Afghanistan and Iraq. This information has not been disseminated to veterans by the Departement of Veterans Affairs. Immunology and Allergy specialist such as Dr. Robert Pulcini of Greenville, South Carolina (http://allergies.about.com/od/insectallergie1/a/bedbugs.htm) are warning that due to veteran's having significant changes to their immune systems, bed bug bites can result in life threatening anaphylactic shock which can be fatal. Dr. Pulcini and other specialists are issuing epinephrine injectors as a life saving last hope for affected soldiers. The shot is the the same shot issued to veterans to ward off chemical attacks on the battlefield. This assertation is now being backed up by major lawfirms such as Edgar Snyder and associates of Pennsylvania (http://www.edgarsnyder.com/injury/bed-bug-injuries/index.html) and many other national lawfirms from Illinois, Alabama, and California.

Secretary Eric K. Shinseki head of the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) has been informed of the need to warn veterans of the situation, as well as veterans service organizations including the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran's of America (IAVA). Veterans are being warned that they should be aware of the presence of bed bug infestations when they rent hotels and take proper precautions to avoid bites. Recent media reports on lawsuits show that French hotel giant Accor owner of Motel 6 and nearly 20 other chains, has been the target of numerous high profile lawsuits in this area, and like many other hotel congolomerates have failed to remedy the problem (http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-03-09/news/bs-md-bed-bug-verdict-20120309_1_bedbug-infestation-bunk-beds-bed-wetting). Accor, the world's largest hotel corporation is also being targeted by consumer groups such as bedbugregistry.com for knowingly having dozens of bed bug infested hotels (http://bedbugregistry.com/hotel/chains/Motel-6/). The danger posed by bed bugs is validated by a joint 2011 report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) citing the facts that bed bugs are known to cause deadly allergic reactions and infections, with their long term health threat being unknown (http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/ehs/publications/bed_bugs_cdc-epa_statement.htm).

Stable CyanogenMod 10 builds arrive, give devices an unofficial taste of Jelly Bean

Stable CyanogenMod 10 builds arrive, give devices an unofficial taste of Jelly Bean

The very first CyanogenMod 10 builds surfaced while Jelly Bean was still extremely fresh in our memories. The passions around Google's new OS might have cooled months down the road, but that doesn't diminish the impact now that the first stable CM10 builds are here. Four (relatively) safe versions have arrived for devices that are either just getting their official Android 4.1 builds or were never destined to get one in the first place: support for the Samsung Galaxy S III in Sprint and Verizon editions is a natural fit, but both the LG Optimus Black and Samsung's Galaxy S II Skyrocket are making their own unofficial leaps. More devices should be coming down the road once any teething bugs are ironed out. You're still taking your own risks by going with a custom ROM, but it may be worthwhile for CM10 if perks like a root-friendly file manager or an expanded desktop are too tempting.

Part of this complete Breakfast! - The Stars Of Metro Goldwyn Mayer

sunbeam_bears

We had one of the most unusual evenings ever. We and 2 other neighbors went to Lyon's Grill in the Cabaret room for "An Evening with Micky Rooney". We arrived early and things went down hill from there.
When they started seating everyone to preassigned tables, we were led to the last table in the back of the room. It was a booth that seats four. It was set for 9. Others arrived cramming themselves in next to us. One a female Canadian film buff w/ camera in hand, a couple from London with Cockney accents, a midwest couple with a star struck wife. When Margret O'Brien was spotted entering the dining room, we all had to take turns turning around to look, as it was too cramped for everyone to turn around at once. Then we all took turns turning back around to face our place settings. Margret O'Brien was part of the show we would later learn, and she was seated at a table up front.
We ordered food and drink, and they started serving immediately. Half way through our salads the main course arrived. Plates knocked against each other, B&B plates removed to make room. That's when after only a few minutes dessert arrived. Dessert was placed around what little room was left, and then the popovers arrived, and sat atop salt shakers, and au jus cups.
The waiters apologized at rushing us, but explained that the star wanted to start the show now. Our neighbor Dan was to be the opening act, and we figured his bit had been cut from the show. But Dan stepped into the spotlight, and started to sing.

After his first number, the audio was screwed up by one of the Cabaret staff, and Dan lost all his accompaniments. After several painful minutes, Dan was able to find one song that he didn't intend to use. Dan then introduced the Host of the event, a tall man with the largest, most ill fitting toupee we had ever seen. I forget his name, but he had just driven Mickey Rooney, and staff for 4 hours in horrid traffic to get to this gig. He told us so. He was very good at keeping the evening on track, when it never actually was.
He introduced Margret O'Brien, and showed clips from her movies.
Then they brought out Mickey.
They showed a clip of his movies, and then had a Q&A session. Margret decided to intervene, and made mention of what a wonderful, caring man Mickey is...7 times over the course of the evening. I wanted to intervene, and say, "Thank you Miss O'Brien, but we got that on the first take."
Mickey had had enough of being in the spotlight, and decided to leave the room. Honestly, the poor man really didn't want to be there. Actually he really had to go to the bathroom, and quickly. I know this because our neighbor took a bathroom break at the same time. I went outside for a cigarette, as the entire show had ground to a complete halt. Did I mention they were filming this?
While I was outside, our neighbor Dan was asked by the big wig to sing another song. Dan's reply? " Oh God no." Meanwhile my neighbor James, who had been in the bathroom with Mr. Rooney came out to join me and stated that the Gents room stunk to high heaven, and it came from the stall the MGM star was in. Inside, Mr. Rooney was brought back into the Cabaret to say goodnight. John relayed later that it was painful to watch, as Mr. Rooney seemed to have lost his ability to speak... and they kept the microphone on him as he struggled.
I was still outside, and motioned to James that I was going back in, and I opened the door. Standing right there was Mickey Rooney! He smiled at me, as I held the door open while his son helped him out.
Back at the table, John was telling us about what happened, when Dan came over to chat with us. The International, and midwest couples were agog that we knew the opening act. "What a disaster this has been, and that fucking song machine broke." I suggested to Dan that he might need a drink. James and Odessa were coming over to our house, and would he like to join us? He declined saying that he was tired, and had to break down his sound equipment, and had to get home and give Cheetah his diabetes shot.
